Are you part of the University or Academic Department of General Practice?
No - we are entirely independant of the University of Birmingham, including the academic Department of General Practice. We happen to be sited amongst University owned buildings and have University provided signs for practical reasons
Do I have to be a student to register?
No - we welcome anyone who lives within our practice area to register with us.
Can I remain registered after finishing as a student?
Yes - you are very welcome to continue being registered.
I want to remain registered with my home GP
The Department of Health recomends that students are registered where they spend most of their time - this will almost certainly be in Birmingham. We are not able to see people on a repeated basis, provide routine prescriptions or vaccinations, or do home visits for people on a Temporary Registration basis. Being registered in Birmingham should have no impact on any medical care - such as specialists appointments - that you receive at home.
How does the repeat prescription system work?
You need to see a doctor first and agree a repeat prescription is appropriate. Once a prescription is set-up then you can obtain regular prescriptions without a further appointment, until the set medication review date is reached. Each prescription will usually last for 2 months. We will not usually issue larger amounts or put certain drugs, such as anti-depressants, onto repeat, apart from in exceptional circumstances.
I have moved outside the practice area - what do I need to do?
You need to register with another GP. We regret that we cannot make exceptions to this requirement. You can check where other surgeries are located via NHS Direct, or the Primary Care Trust (PCT) covering the area where you have moved to will be able to inform you of local doctors and dentists taking NHS registrations.
How do I access out of hours care?
For urgent problems, phone the out of hours service provider - Primecare - on 0845 603 01761 between 17:30 to 18:30 and 08:00 to 08:45 Monday to Friday. Otherwise call 111 at all other times. In an emergency only - call 999 for an ambulance.
I find it difficult to make appointments
There are plenty of appointments bookable up to 2 weeks in advance for all doctors. They can be booked at any time. Book on the day appointments open for booking at strictly 8:45 and 1:45 and they can be taken very rapidly. The staff will NOT book appointments even a few minutes before these times, so please try to use the book ahead appointments whenever possible.
