Collecting swine flu medication:

Patient Identification 

Patients issued with authorisation vouchers must provide their flu friend with a form of ID to confirm their identity in addition to the authorisation voucher for medication.  Flu friends will also need to take their own ID when collecting antivirals on behalf of the patient. 

The following forms of identification are permissible:

NB: Patients should designate a “flu friend” to collect antivirals from the Charlotte road collection centre in Stirchley on their behalf, as they will not be given access to the centre to collect them in person.

If you think you have symptoms of Swine Flu but do not have any underlying health problems, such as asthma, diabetes or heart trouble, please telephone:

If you have underlying problems such as asthma, diabetes or heart trouble or are pregnant or ringing about a child under the age of 1, you need to speak to a GP or Nurse.

If you are having active treatment for cancer you need to speak to a GP or Nurse

You must also talk to a GP or Nurse if you or your child are suddenly feeling worse after 5 days.

You should also ask to speak to a doctor or nurse if you are worried at any point.

Medication Collection Point

Pharmacies no longer stock or dispense antiviral medication

South Birmingham PCT has set up a centre (the "ACP") where vouchers issued by GP's or the National Flu Line can be exchanged for the medication:

New Advice re Self-Certification of Illness

Students who believe they may have Swine Flu, who have contacted the National Pandemic Flu Service by telephone or on-line and been prescribed Tamiflu and told to self isolate for 7 days may complete a self certificate.

They should attach a copy of the label or the actual label on their supply of Tamiflu to the self certificate and write the unique code number they are given for the flu friend to get hold of Tamiflu on the top of the self certificate.

This dispensation is provided exceptionally as most GPs are not seeing patients with suspected Swine Flu and so students are not able to gain a GP medical certificate. Swine flu self- certification will not count towards the 10 days normally allowed for certification in any one academic year.
